The fact that the Windies have failed to win even a single game in the ongoing One-Day International series comes as no surprise despite the return of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels. England, especially at home, have been a terrific outfit in the 50-over format and despite all the drama surrounding their star allrounder Ben Stokes ahead of the fourth game, they still managed to find a way to win, that helped them bag the series.
The saga surrounding Stokes and Alex Hales hasn-t calmed down one bit. In fact, with each passing day, it has only continued to put the ECB under more pressure to act tough on its players. But Eoin Morgan-s men will have to put that behind once again and regroup less than 48 hours after the victory at The Oval in order to finish their home season on a high. Considering the hosts also managed to overpower a spirited Windies performance to seal the series in dramatic fashion, one cannot rule out the possibility of Windies going winless after having already lost out on automatic World Cup qualification.
Not many teams end up on the losing side despite one man hammering 176, which was backed up by a brilliant five-wicket haul while defending a mammoth 356. But the Windies agonisingly lost after a calculated assault from Moeen Ali and Jos Buttler over a seven-over period that turned the tide before the rain arrived. DLS is unlikely to come into the equation with the rain expected to stay away during the game in Southampton but Windies-s problems have only been compounded with Evin Lewis and Jason Holder ruled out of the clash.
While Lewis suffered a hairline fracture during his epic knock on Wednesday, Holder has returned home to attend his uncle-s funeral in Barbados. These two combined made 253 runs in a losing cause and their absence will only add to the responsibility of the two senior statesmen Gayle and Samuels.
England will look to tinker with their combination once again after their bowling attack got plundered at The Oval. They played with only five bowlers as Sam Billings was preferred as the replacement for Stokes. But after conceding more than 350, it will come as no surprise if Morgan opts for a sixth bowling option in their bid to round off the series 4-0.
What to expect: Showers are expected early in the morning in Southampton but a full game is still expected with no rain threat in the evening. Going by what we witnessed in the most recent ODI played here at the venue in May, the pitch will be full of runs with both England and South Africa scoring over 300 in a thriller.
Jason Roy, who made the most of an opportunity he wasn-t anticipating, will look to add to Hales-s woes by making another valuable contribution. But whether Billings retains his spot or not remains to be seen especially with England looking vulnerable with only five bowlers. England have the option of including Dawid Malan as well, who has been drafted in the squad for the final ODI.
Kyle Hope in all likelihood will get another crack at the top of the order in Lewis-s absence. Windies will also have a tough time replacing Holder, considering he also promoted himself up the order in the last game. Jason Mohammed will be leading the side in his absence.
Did you know?
England have won eight and lost seven of their 15 ODIs at the Rosebowl, Windies have a 2-1 win-loss record here with the only loss coming against England in 2012.
Chris Gayle needs three more sixes to become the second player to hit 250 sixes on ODIs after Shahid Afridi (270).
Joe Root is 46 runs away from becoming the tenth England player to score 4000 ODI runs.
What they said:
"The confidence with which he-s swinging the bat is fabulous. It looks wider than it normally does. When somebody-s in form like that, it-s great to watch." - Eoin Morgan on Moeen Ali-s recent explosive form with the bat
